Science Café: «Lower Secondary School: Between Academic Performance, Stigma, and Future Opportunities»

Science Café: «Lower Secondary School: Between Academic Performance, Stigma, and Future Opportunities»

Thursday, 8 October 2026
6:30 p.m.

Real, Sek or Gymi? In Switzerland, the type of lower secondary school a child attends is not solely dependent on their abilities. Their place of residence, the selection process in the 6th grade of elementary school, and the respective school model also play a role. At the Science Café, we’ll explore the history of lower secondary education, present research findings, and discuss what makes for a good lower secondary education for everyone.

Sandra Hupka-Brunner: Educational Sociologist & Co-Director of the TREE Study, University Bern
Lucien Criblez: Historian of Education, University of Zurich
Albert Düggeli: Educational Scientist & Vice Principal for Research and Development, PHGR
Host: Reto Givel-Bernhard, Principal, PHGR
Organizer: Graubünden University of Teacher Education (PHGR)
